If you've never had a newborn photography session before, you may be wondering what actually happens on the day. Will your baby sleep? What if they cry? How long will it take? What should you bring?
The good news is that you don't need to know exactly what to expect. Your newborn photography session is designed to be relaxed and baby-led, with plenty of time for feeding, cuddles and settling along the way.
Before Your Session
Before your session, I'll provide you with everything you need to know to help you prepare. There's no need to stress about getting your baby into a perfect routine or making sure they sleep the whole way to the studio. If your baby is hungry when you arrive, we can feed them before we begin. Babies often need to feed during their session too, and that's completely normal. You can find more tips on preparing for your session in my guide to [How to Prepare for Your Studio Newborn Photography Session].
When You Arrive
When you arrive at the studio, we'll take some time to settle in. I'll make sure you're comfortable and we'll go through anything you need to know before we begin. Your baby will always be my priority. I'll take my time getting them settled and comfortable rather than rushing straight into photographs. The studio is kept warm for your baby, particularly while they are being photographed without clothing or in delicate wraps.
During Your Newborn Photography Session
Newborn sessions are very relaxed and don't follow a strict schedule. Some babies sleep almost the entire time. Others need plenty of feeding, cuddling and settling. Some babies simply don't want to sleep, and that's okay too. I'll gently work with your baby and follow their cues throughout the session. If they need a feed, we stop for a feed. If they need a cuddle, we have a cuddle. If they need a nappy change, we take a break. There's no expectation that your baby will behave perfectly. My job is to create beautiful images while keeping your baby safe and comfortable throughout the session.
Will There Be Family Photos?
Depending on the session you've booked, we can capture photographs of your baby with you, your partner and any siblings. These photographs often become some of the most meaningful images from the session because they capture your family together during those first few weeks. The Solo newborn package is the only package that does not include family.
What Happens After Your Session?
After your session, I'll go through your images and prepare a proof gallery for you to view. The images in this gallery have a light base edit so you can see the photographs clearly, but they haven't had their final editing completed yet. You'll then be able to look through your gallery and choose the images you'd like from your selected collection.
Once you've made your selections, I'll professionally edit your chosen images, including the detailed colour correction and finishing touches that make them ready for your final gallery. This means you don't have to choose your favourite images before seeing how they look together. You can take your time looking through your proof gallery and decide which photographs you love most.
Most Importantly, Relax
Your newborn photography session isn't about having a perfectly behaved baby or getting everything exactly right. It's about capturing this incredibly short stage of your baby's life and giving you photographs that allow you to remember how little they were, how they fitted into your arms and what your family looked like during those first precious weeks. I'll guide you through the session and work around your baby's needs so you can relax and enjoy the experience. If you're considering newborn photography in Perth, I'd love to help you plan your session and answer any questions you may have.
